Karragarra Island is the smallest and quietest of the four southern bay islands, with a narrow strip of housing, no commercial centre and a strong holiday and part-time resident character. It has no sewer, and every work vehicle arrives by booked barge. Redlands Blocked Drains is a local referral service. We put you in touch with QBCC-licensed local plumbers who work on Karragarra Island.
Getting a plumber here, honestly
Getting to Karragarra Island with a work vehicle means a booked vehicle barge from Weinam Creek at Redland Bay, so this is not a job anyone can promise to do today. The passenger ferries do not carry work vehicles, trailers or equipment, bookings fill, and services can run late at low water on spring tides.
What we will do is call you back promptly and tell you honestly whether a local plumber can get to you, and when. Some of the trades who work the islands live on them or on a neighbouring island, which is often the fastest answer and usually the cheapest, because there is no crossing in their costs. It is also common for a plumber crossing for one job to pick up others on the same trip, so it is worth asking.
For current barge bookings and fares, go to the operator at SeaLink. This site states no fare and no timetable, because a state subsidy, an operator discount and a fuel surcharge all apply and the figures move.
Karragarra Island is unsewered
Redland City Council states that Karragarra Island is unsewered and serviced by on-site wastewater treatment and septic systems.
There is no council sewer main to blame. Your wastewater goes to an on-site septic or treatment system on your own block, so a backing-up drain here is almost always a problem on your side of the fence, and the fix is a different job from a mainland sewer blockage. The council's three-step test, the inspection opening diagnosis and its sewer reimbursement process all assume a council main, and none of them apply here.
The council lists seven wastewater treatment plants, at Capalaba, Cleveland, Dunwich, Mount Cotton, Point Lookout, Thorneside and Victoria Point. None is on the southern bay islands. This site publishes no cost or date for island sewerage.
What actually goes wrong here
- A full tank, which is the cheapest cause to rule out and the most common.
- A saturated disposal area after a wet week, backing the system up from the far end. Wet, smelly or unusually green ground over the trenches or irrigation field is the sign.
- A failed pump, blower or float switch on an aerated or advanced treatment system. Check whether an alarm has been silenced at some point.
- Roots or a collapse in the line to the tank, which is ordinary drain work for a camera and a jetter.
- Intermittent use. This matters more on Karragarra than anywhere, because so much of the housing is holiday or part-time. A biological treatment system that has sat idle for weeks will not handle a sudden full house, and a system that has sat idle for months may need servicing before it will work properly at all.
The septic and on-site wastewater page covers the difference between the system types.
What the rules require
On-site systems in Redland City must meet plumbing, health and environmental standards, and council approval applies to installing or altering one. This site will not tell you a specific system type is mandatory on the island, because that claim is not verified on any council page we could find.
Plumbing and drainage work in Queensland requires a QBCC licence at any value. Ask for the licence number and check it on the QBCC register before signing.
What it costs
Clearing a blocked line into the tank is ordinary drain work in the usual $150 to $400 range, with a camera at $249 to $600 and jetting bundled at $350 to $900. On-site wastewater work is priced separately. Where a mainland plumber crosses, the barge booking and most of a day of travel go into the price. The cost guide sets out the ranges.
Frequently asked questions
When will someone get here?
The callback is prompt. The visit depends on the next available vehicle barge and on whether the plumber is island-based. We will tell you which, rather than guessing at a time.
Can one plumber do several island jobs in a trip?
It happens often, because the crossing is the expensive part. If your job can wait a few days, say so, because it may let you share a crossing and reduce the cost.
Is my blocked drain the council's?
No. Karragarra Island has no council sewer main. The tank, the pump and the disposal area are all yours.
We only use the house in holidays. Anything we should do?
Have the system serviced on a schedule rather than when it fails, and go easy on it for the first day or two of a full house. Long idle periods are hard on a biological system.
