Blocked toilet help in the Redlands

A plumber working on a wall-hung toilet

A blocked toilet is the most common drain call-out there is, and most of them clear in a single visit. The useful question is not how to clear it but what it is telling you, because a toilet that blocks once and a toilet that blocks every few months are two different problems. Redlands Blocked Drains connects you with QBCC-licensed local drain plumbers who clear blocked toilets across the Redlands.

Is it just the toilet?

This is the first thing to establish, and it is the council's own first test. If the toilet is blocked and every other fixture in the house drains normally, the problem is almost certainly in the toilet or the branch line serving it, and it is yours to fix. If the shower, the basins and the laundry are also slow or gurgling, you do not have a blocked toilet. You have a blocked sewer, and the diagnosis changes completely.

The tell is usually sound. A toilet that gurgles when a nearby shower drains, or a shower that bubbles when the toilet flushes, means air is being pushed through a line that is partly blocked further down.

What actually blocks them

The split across the Redlands is fairly clean. In Thornlands and the newer estates behind Redland Bay, a blocked toilet is overwhelmingly something that went down it. In Cleveland, Ormiston, Wellington Point, Birkdale, Thorneside and Alexandra Hills, roots and old pipe come into the picture far more often. Around Capalaba, with its flats and shared lines, the question of whose branch it is comes into it too.

What to try before you call

If two attempts with a plunger have not moved it, stop and get a licensed plumber. Plumbing and drainage work in Queensland requires a QBCC licence at any value.

What clearing it costs

A standard blocked toilet clear typically runs $150 to $400 in the Redlands, with most jobs around $280. If the pan has to come off to retrieve an object, or the blockage is further down the branch, expect more. If roots are involved, root clearing typically runs $250 to $600 and a camera inspection typically runs $249 to $600, or $350 to $900 with jetting. The cost guide has the full picture.

When it keeps happening

A toilet that blocks repeatedly is not bad luck. The usual causes are a partly root-filled branch line, a section of pipe that has sagged and holds water, or a pan that was never installed with enough fall. A CCTV camera answers it in twenty minutes, and the answer determines whether you need a clear, a repair or a relining.

Frequently asked questions

Are flushable wipes really a problem?

Yes. They pass through the pan and then sit in the line. Plumbers across South East Queensland pull them out of drains constantly, and they are a frequent cause of blockages in shared strata lines where many households contribute.

My toilet is slow but not blocked. Does that matter?

It is worth looking at. A consistently sluggish flush often means a partial blockage downstream, a venting problem or a line without enough fall, and it tends to become a full blockage eventually.

Can I use a drain snake from the hardware shop?

A small closet auger can work on a soft blockage near the pan. A longer snake in inexperienced hands can scratch the china or get stuck in the trap, and it will not tell you what caused the blockage.

Who pays in a unit or townhouse?

If only your lot's fixtures are affected it is usually the owner's cost. If several lots back up, it is likely a common property line and the body corporate is involved. Camera footage settles it quickly.

I am on a septic system and the toilet is backing up. Same job?

Not quite. On the islands and the rural blocks, a back-up often means the tank or the disposal area rather than the pan. The septic and on-site wastewater page covers it.
