Emergency blocked drains in the Redlands
Updated October 2026

Some drain problems can wait until Monday. Sewage coming up through the shower drain is not one of them. If waste water is backing up inside your home, a toilet is overflowing, or stormwater is rising towards the house, you need a QBCC-licensed drain plumber now, not a booking next week.
Redlands Blocked Drains connects you with licensed local drain plumbers who take urgent and after-hours work across the mainland, from Thorneside, Birkdale and Wellington Point through Cleveland, Capalaba and Alexandra Hills to Thornlands, Victoria Point, Redland Bay, Mount Cotton and Sheldon. Send the quote form with a note that it is urgent and your details go straight through.
What counts as a drain emergency
- Sewage backing up into the house through floor drains, showers or toilets
- Every drain in the house blocked at once, which points to the main sewer line
- A toilet overflowing that will not stop with the water off
- Stormwater pooling against the house or garage during rain
- Strong sewage smell inside with gurgling from multiple drains
- On an unsewered property, waste surfacing over the tank or the disposal area
One slow sink is a booking. Waste water where you live is urgent.
What to do right now
While you wait for a call back, three things limit the damage. Stop putting water down the drains, so no washing machine, dishwasher or showers. If sewage is surfacing at an outside gully, that gully is doing its job by keeping the overflow outside the house, so do not cap it or block it. Keep people and pets away from any surfaced waste water, and if it has touched carpets or floors inside, photograph everything before cleaning for your insurer.
In a unit or townhouse complex, tell the body corporate manager or building manager as well. A blocked shared line affects every lot connected to it, and the fix is usually arranged through the body corporate.
Urgent work on the islands
This needs saying plainly, because the honest answer is not the one most sites give. A plumber with a jetter, a camera reel or an excavator reaches Russell, Macleay, Lamb and Karragarra islands, and Dunwich, Amity Point and Point Lookout, on a booked vehicle barge. The passenger ferries do not carry work vehicles. Bookings fill, and services can run late at low water on spring tides.
So for an urgent island job, two things happen. We get you a callback promptly, and the plumber tells you honestly whether they can cross, when, and whether a trade who already lives on the island is the better answer. Many do, and on an urgent job that is usually the shortest path. What nobody can honestly offer you is a mainland crew at your door on the strength of a phone call. Coochiemudlo Island is the exception on access, with a short ferry from Victoria Point and a vehicle barge when a job needs one.
Meanwhile, the containment advice above matters more on an island than anywhere else. Stop using water, keep people clear of anything that has surfaced, and if the property runs a septic or treatment system, note what kind when you send the form.
What urgent drain work costs
After-hours call-outs cost more than booked weekday work, and that is true of every plumber in South East Queensland. A standard clear that costs $150 to $400 in business hours will sit higher at night or on a Sunday. On the islands, the barge crossing is a real cost and the plumber will say so in the quote. The licensed plumbers we work with still quote before they start, so you know the price up front. If the problem can safely wait until morning, they will tell you that too, because a booked morning job is cheaper than a midnight one.
Why mains matter when it is urgent
If every fixture in the house is backing up, the blockage is usually in the main sewer line between the house and the council connection point. The sewer mains in the sewered parts of the Redlands belong to Redland City Council, through its water and wastewater business, City Water (previously Redland Water). Your own drain line, from the house to the connection point, is yours. If your neighbours have the same problem at the same time, the fault may be in the council main itself, and the council's own advice is to report that immediately and get a reference number. A QBCC-licensed drain plumber can usually establish which side of the connection the problem sits on, which can save you the whole bill.
If you are not on sewer
On the four southern bay islands, at Amity Point, across about half the urban areas of Dunwich and Point Lookout, and on the rural blocks at Mount Cotton, Sheldon and acreage Redland Bay, an urgent back-up is often the on-site system rather than the drain line. A full tank, a failed pump or a disposal area saturated after heavy rain will all push waste water back towards the house. Treat surfacing waste as contaminated, keep people and pets clear, and tell the plumber what system you have when you request the quote. The septic and on-site wastewater page covers the difference.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a plumber in the middle of the night?
On the mainland, often yes. Many of the plumbers we work with take after-hours calls. Expect a higher call-out rate, quoted before work starts. On the islands, the barge timetable governs it, and an island-based trade is usually the quicker answer.
Is sewage backup dangerous?
Treat it as contaminated. Keep children and pets away, wear gloves if you must touch anything, and wash thoroughly afterwards. Professional cleaning is worth it for any indoor spill.
Will my insurer cover an overflow?
Many home policies cover sudden water damage inside the house, though usually not the drain repair itself. Photograph the damage before cleanup and check your policy.
I live in a unit. Who do I call?
If the blockage affects only your lot's fixtures, it is usually yours to fix. If several lots are affected, it is likely a common property line, so let your body corporate manager know as well as requesting a quote.
