Drain jet blasting in the Redlands

Updated October 2026

Jet blasting is high-pressure water on a flexible hose, fed down the drain with a nozzle that fires backwards. The jets cut the blockage apart and the reaction pulls the hose up the line, scouring the pipe wall as it goes. That last part is the whole point. A mechanical cutter punches a hole through a root mat and the drain runs again for a while. A jetter takes the root mass and the grease film off the wall, which is a different result. Redlands Blocked Drains connects you with QBCC-licensed local drain plumbers who jet drains across the Redlands.

When jetting is the right tool

Jetting is not the answer to everything. If the camera shows a collapsed or badly cracked section, more water pressure is not the fix and a good plumber will say so rather than selling you another clear.

The tree stays where it is

This matters in the Redlands more than in most places. Most of the mainland sits inside the state's koala habitat and koala priority area mapping under the Planning Regulation 2017, the Nature Conservation koala conservation plan applies to clearing koala habitat trees, and on top of that the council runs an environmental significance overlay in the Redland City Plan and a local law protecting vegetation on private property.

The practical upshot is simple. Cutting roots out of a pipe is ordinary drainage work. Felling a tree, or excavating through a protected tree's root zone, is a permit question here and the answer is often no. So the honest offer is the better one anyway: the roots come out of the pipe, the pipe gets cleaned and if necessary relined, and the tree stays. Nobody on this site will offer to take your tree out.

What a jetting visit looks like

What it costs

A standard clear using jetting typically runs $150 to $400 in the Redlands, with most jobs around $280. Tree root clearing typically runs $250 to $600. Jetting bundled with a CCTV inspection typically runs $350 to $900. Long private runs on acreage at Sheldon, Mount Cotton and rural Redland Bay take longer and cost more, as do tight canal-front blocks at Raby Bay in Cleveland and Aquatic Paradise in Birkdale where getting the machine to the access point is half the job. Full ranges are in the cost guide.

Pressure, and old pipe

A fair question, and worth asking the plumber directly. A jetter run at the wrong pressure with the wrong nozzle can damage an already fragile earthenware pipe. An experienced operator matches the pressure and nozzle to the pipe material and condition, which is another argument for cameraing first in the old suburbs rather than guessing. If a pipe is so far gone that jetting would break it, that pipe needed replacing or relining anyway and you are better off knowing.

Frequently asked questions

Will jetting fix a blocked drain for good?

It fixes the blockage properly. Whether it stays fixed depends on the pipe. Roots regrow into an open clay joint, so a recurring problem in an old line usually ends in relining, and a camera tells you whether you are in that situation.

Is jetting better than an electric eel?

For roots, grease and silt, generally yes, because it cleans the pipe wall rather than making a hole. An eel still has its place, particularly for a hard obstruction in a small line.

Can I hire a jetter and do it myself?

Domestic units exist and they will shift a soft blockage in a short run. They will not cut a root mat out of a sewer line, and they will not tell you what caused it. Plumbing and drainage work in Queensland requires a QBCC licence at any value.

Does jetting work on a septic system?

The drain lines can be jetted. If the back-up is the tank, the pump or a saturated disposal area, jetting the line will not help, which is why the diagnosis comes first. See the septic and on-site wastewater page.

Can it be done on the islands?

Yes, and plumbers do work the islands. A jetter is a vehicle-mounted machine, so it crosses on a booked vehicle barge. That makes it a planned job rather than a drop-everything one, and an island-based trade is often the quicker answer.
