Victoria Point sits at the southern end of the old bayside strip, with the shopping centre and the marine precinct, the jetty across to Coochiemudlo Island, and a mix of housing that runs from genuinely old bay-front stock to newer infill behind it. Redlands Blocked Drains is a local referral service. We put you in touch with QBCC-licensed local drain plumbers who service Victoria Point.

Why Victoria Point drains block

The older parts of Victoria Point were developed early enough to have jointed clay and earthenware sewer and stormwater line in the ground, and the mature trees along those streets have had decades to find the joints. That combination, an open joint and a feeder root, produces the root mat that catches waste and finally stops the drain.

Close to the water the ground is flat and tidal. Stormwater runs on the foreshore streets have very little fall, so they carry sediment slowly and drop it in the pipe, and when a king tide meets a summer storm the system has nowhere to discharge and surcharges instead. That is a different problem from a blockage and it has different answers, which the surcharge page sets out.

The newer infill behind the centre is a different job again. PVC with rubber-ringed joints does not weep the way clay does, so a blockage there is far more likely to be wipes, fat or something that should not have gone down a toilet.

The treatment plant, and Coochiemudlo

Victoria Point has one of the council's seven wastewater treatment plants, and it treats more than Victoria Point. The council states that wastewater from the Coochiemudlo Island population is piped and treated at the Victoria Point plant, which is why Coochiemudlo is the one Redlands island that is sewered. If you are enquiring about an island property, the Coochiemudlo Island page covers what that means in practice.

The council's three-step test

Redland City Council publishes a short diagnostic that is worth running first.

The sewer mains in the sewered parts of the Redlands belong to Redland City Council, through its water and wastewater business, City Water (previously Redland Water). Your own drain line, from the house to the connection point, is yours. Where the fault is the council's, its reimbursement process needs a plumber to confirm it and needs the blockage reported immediately for a reference number. The full guide covers it.

What clearing a blocked drain involves

The licensed drain plumbers we work with usually start with a CCTV drain camera to find the blockage and check the pipe, then clear it with jet blasting. Silt in a flat foreshore stormwater run needs water rather than a cutter, which is one of the reasons jetting is the default here. Where roots have cracked an old line, relining seals it from inside without digging up the garden, and the tree stays.

A standard clear typically costs $150 to $400. A camera inspection runs $249 to $600, or $350 to $900 combined with jetting. Relining typically runs $3,000 to $8,000 or more. You get a price before any work starts.

Frequently asked questions

My yard holds water for hours after rain. Blocked or not?

Either is possible on this ground. A camera distinguishes a silted or root-filled pipe from a run with no fall left, and tidal surcharge from both.

Does the marine air affect drains here?

It affects the metal more than the pipe. Grates, risers, covers and older fittings near the water corrode faster, which is worth checking while a plumber is already on site.

Is my street on the old clay or the newer PVC?

It depends which part of Victoria Point you are in. The older bay-front streets commonly have jointed clay. The infill behind the centre is usually PVC. A camera settles it.

I have a property on Coochiemudlo. Same service?

Coochiemudlo is sewered and piped to the Victoria Point plant, and access is a short ferry. It is served much like a mainland suburb, with the ferry still in the picture. See the Coochiemudlo Island page.
