Thorneside is the small northern toe of Redland City, tucked against the Brisbane boundary, with the station, the foreshore reserve and a compact grid of established housing. It is low, flat and close to the water, which is most of what you need to know about its drains. Redlands Blocked Drains is a local referral service. We put you in touch with QBCC-licensed local drain plumbers who service Thorneside.
Worth noting for the sake of clarity: Lota, immediately north, is Brisbane City. Thorneside is the Redland City side of that edge, so Redland City Council's processes and its own wastewater treatment plant at Thorneside are the ones that apply here.
Why Thorneside drains block
Flat, low ground. Thorneside sits at the bottom of its catchment with very little fall to work with. A stormwater or sewer run with almost no grade moves water slowly, and slow water drops its sediment in the pipe rather than carrying it out. Over the years the effective bore narrows.
Tide. The foreshore streets drain towards water that rises twice a day. When a king tide coincides with heavy summer rain, the system has nowhere to discharge and surcharges from the bottom, out of pits and gullies. That is not a blockage and clearing it will not help, which is why the surcharge page is worth reading before you spend anything.
Old jointed line. Thorneside is established enough to have vitrified clay and earthenware sewer and stormwater line in service, and the mature trees along the streets have found the joints. Root mats catch paper and waste until the drain stops.
Sandy, coastal ground near the reserve, which washes fine material into stormwater pits and settles it in the flat runs between the house and the kerb.
The overflow relief gully matters more here
On flat tidal ground the overflow relief gully does real work. It is the grated drain outside, set lower than the lowest fixture indoors, so when the line backs up the water lifts that grate and spills in the yard rather than coming up through the shower. In a surcharge event that is exactly what you want, and it is exactly when people are tempted to block it because of the mess.
Keep it clear of leaves and soil, keep the grate liftable, and do not pave over it or build it up level with a new patio. There is a full guide to it on this site.
The council's three-step test
Redland City Council publishes a short diagnostic that costs nothing to run.
- One fixture slow and the rest of the house fine means the problem is most likely in your home's plumbing.
- The overflow relief gully overflowing while no water is being used on the property means the blockage is likely to be in the council's sewer main. Clear any obstruction, check the grate moves freely, then contact the council.
- An inspection opening that holds water or drains slowly while an indoor tap runs means contact the council. Dry means the house plumbing, so call a plumber.
The sewer mains in the sewered parts of the Redlands belong to Redland City Council, through its water and wastewater business, City Water (previously Redland Water). Thorneside's wastewater is treated at the council's own Thorneside plant. Your own drain line, from the house to the connection point, is yours. The full guide covers the reimbursement path where the main is the council's.
What clearing a blocked drain involves
The licensed drain plumbers we work with usually start with a CCTV drain camera, because on this ground the camera is the only thing that separates silt, roots and a grade problem from each other. Jet blasting is the right tool for silt and sand as well as for roots, since a cutter will not move sediment. Where the camera shows roots have cracked old clay, relining seals it from inside and the tree stays.
A standard clear typically costs $150 to $400. A camera inspection runs $249 to $600, or $350 to $900 combined with jetting. Relining typically runs $3,000 to $8,000 or more. You get a price before any work starts.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my yard only flood on some storms?
The variable is usually the tide rather than the rain. A storm at low water drains away, the same storm at high water has nowhere to go.
Is there anything that actually fixes a flat drain?
Re-grading or re-laying the run, a silt pit so sediment is caught where you can empty it, and getting roof water away from the slab. On a genuinely low site below the outlet level, a sump and pump is the reliable answer and it is a real project.
Am I in Redland City or Brisbane?
Thorneside is Redland City. Lota, next door, is Brisbane City. Your rates notice settles it, and it determines which council you report a main to.
Does sandy ground cause blockages?
It contributes. Fine sand washes into pits and settles in flat runs, and because it is not a solid obstruction it is often missed until a camera goes down.
